Yes, to start. The app is free to download, and dramas open with free episodes. After those, most dramas ask for coins or a VIP plan.
In the PlotFans catalog, a typical drama has 9 free episodes, about 16.7% of the series. Only 9.1% of the dramas give just the first episode for free.
What "free" means on ReelShort
ReelShort's own guides describe the same model. The app costs nothing to download. A drama opens with some free episodes, and then the paywall starts: every further episode costs coins, or you pay for a VIP plan that unlocks the rest. ReelShort's cost guide adds that some dramas are free to watch in full.
Free is not the same as unlimited, though:
- The paywall comes after the free episodes. ReelShort's coin guide says it usually arrives right after a major plot twist.
- Free coins exist, with a limit. The app gives coins for watching ads, for daily check-ins and for small tasks, and there is a daily cap, so ads alone will not carry you through a whole drama.
- Free coins expire, paid coins do not. Reward coins come with a time limit, while the coins you buy stay in your account until you spend them.
How many episodes are free
We counted. On October 24, 2026 the PlotFans catalog held 1,122 dramas that can still be watched on the app. For 1,082 of them we know where the paywall starts, so those are the dramas counted here.

ReelShort's guides name these ways to earn free coins:
- Watch ads. Each ad earns coins, up to a daily limit.
- Check in every day. A streak pays more, and the last day of a week-long streak pays the most.
- Finish tasks. The task list in the app changes. It has included logging in, watching free episodes, sharing the app and turning on notifications.

How we counted
- The dramas. Every drama in the PlotFans catalog that can still be watched on the app: 1,122 on October 24, 2026. The catalog is taken from ReelShort's own listings.
- The free count. For each drama we take the number of first episodes that can be watched without paying, as ReelShort lists them. Dramas where that number is missing, or where even the first episode is paid, are left out: 1,082 dramas are counted.
- "Typical" means the median. Half of the dramas have fewer free episodes than this, and half have more. A few very long or very short dramas do not move it.
- It changes. ReelShort can move a paywall at any time. The numbers on this page are worked out again from every new export of the catalog, and the date at the top is the date of that export.
